Healthie vs. Practice Better vs. Alva: An Honest Comparison for RDs
Healthie vs. Practice Better vs. Alva compared honestly for dietitians — features, billing automation depth, pricing philosophy, and who should pick each platform.
Disclosure: this comparison is written by the team behind Alva — one of the three products in it. We think the comparison is still worth writing, because these three platforms represent three genuinely different philosophies, and for many RDs the right answer is one of the other two. We'll say so where that's true.
Put Healthie, Practice Better, and Alva side by side and the feature checklists look deceptively similar: scheduling, intake, notes, portal, payments. The real differences aren't in what boxes get checked — they're in what each product believes your biggest problem is.
Get that belief right for your practice and any of the three is a good buy. Get it wrong and you'll own excellent software for problems you don't have.
Three philosophies, not three feature lists
Healthie: the platform. Healthie's bet is that practices grow and need infrastructure — multi-provider scheduling, an API to build on, integrations, integrated claims. It's why nutrition startups and group practices default to it. The cost of that generality is that a solo RD uses a fraction of the machine.
Practice Better: the client relationship. Practice Better's bet is that your practice is built on ongoing relationships — programs, protocols, packages, check-ins, a portal clients love. For wellness and cash-pay models this is exactly right, and nothing here executes it better. Insurance billing exists but isn't the center of gravity.
Alva: the revenue pipeline. Alva's bet is that for insurance-based RDs the bottleneck isn't the client experience or the platform — it's the unpaid, unautomated admin between a session and a payment. So it automates that pipeline: eligibility verification before the visit, AI charting from the recorded session (with consent), CPT/ICD generation from real documentation and session time, claim validation, submission, tracking, and ERA posting.
Feature comparison
| Capability | Healthie | Practice Better | Alva |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduling & reminders | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Client portal | Yes | Yes — a particular strength | Yes |
| Wellness programs / protocols | Yes | Yes — best in class | No — not the focus |
| Documentation / charting | Templates, forms | Templates, forms | AI charting from recorded sessions |
| API / integrations | Yes — a particular strength | Some integrations | Focused, not an open API |
| Eligibility checks | Supported workflows | Manual (you verify) | Automated before the visit |
| Claim creation & submission | Integrated CMS-1500 via clearinghouse | Superbills; claims on higher tiers | Automated, with pre-submission validation |
| Code generation from documentation | You select codes | You select codes | Generated from the session, units from real time |
| Claim status tracking | Dashboard — you monitor | Workflow-dependent — you monitor | Monitored, with alerts on rejections |
| ERA payment posting | Supported — largely manual review | Manual | Automated posting |
Two honest caveats on this table. First, Healthie and Practice Better ship updates constantly; verify any single row against their current documentation. Second, "supported" versus "automated" is the load-bearing distinction throughout — a feature that exists but requires your hands still costs your hours.
Pricing philosophy (more interesting than prices)
We're deliberately not quoting competitor prices — they change, tiers shift, and you should check current pricing on each vendor's site. The philosophies, though, are stable:
- Healthie and Practice Better price by tier: entry plans are affordable, and the features insurance practices need (claims workflows, automations, higher client counts) tend to live on higher tiers. Budget for the tier you'll actually need, not the one on the banner.
- Alva is a flat $99/month, everything included, 7-day free trial, no credit card. The reasoning: if the product's job is to replace admin hours, the math should be simple — one price against the hours you get back. (We ran that math across a whole DIY stack in the true cost of a DIY billing stack.)
Whichever you choose, price the system, not the subscription: add the AI scribe, the clearinghouse fees, and — the big one — the hourly value of the admin work the software leaves on your desk.
Who should pick each
Pick Healthie if you run or plan a group practice, need multi-provider logistics, or want an API to build on. It's the most complete infrastructure of the three, and for teams that's decisive. A solo insurance-based RD can absolutely run on Healthie — just expect to operate the billing features rather than be operated for.
Pick Practice Better if your revenue is programs, packages, and coaching relationships. Genuinely: don't buy billing automation you won't use. Practice Better's program tooling and portal will do more for a wellness practice than anything Alva offers. (If you're on Practice Better and insurance is growing, here's when practices tend to switch.)
Pick Alva if insurance is your engine and admin is your ceiling — you're doing verification calls, unit math, claim tracking, and ERA posting yourself, and those hours are capping your caseload or eating your evenings. That pipeline is the entire product.
What to actually test in trials
All three offer trials or demos. Skip the portal tour and run one realistic client through end to end:
- Check a new client's nutrition benefits. Who did the work — you or the software?
- Document a session. How long from session end to finished note?
- Get to codes. Did you select 97802/97803 and count units, or did the system (correctly) derive them?
- Submit the claim and find its status two days later. How many clicks?
- Simulate payment day. Where does the ERA go, and who posts it?
Write down your minutes for each step. Multiply by your weekly client count. That number — not the feature list — is the comparison.
How Alva helps: If steps 1–5 above are currently "you, you, you, you, and you," that's the exact pipeline Alva automates for a flat $99/month — eligibility to ERA, with AI charting in between. Run the same five-step test on us: Start a 7-day free trial.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between Healthie and Practice Better?
Healthie is a full practice platform with an API, built to power group practices and nutrition companies, with integrated insurance claims. Practice Better centers the client relationship — programs, protocols, packages, and a polished portal — and is strongest for wellness and cash-pay models. They overlap on scheduling, documentation, and portals, but their centers of gravity differ.
Is Alva a replacement for Healthie or Practice Better?
For insurance-based dietitians, it can be. Alva covers scheduling, intake, documentation, and payments, but its core difference is automating the billing pipeline: eligibility checks, AI charting from recorded sessions, code generation, claim validation and submission, status tracking, and ERA posting. Practices built on wellness programs and packages are usually better served by Practice Better or Healthie.
Which platform is cheapest for a solo dietitian?
Entry tiers across platforms tend to land in a broadly similar monthly range, but the tiers matter: insurance and automation features often sit on higher plans, and add-ons accumulate. Alva is a flat $99 per month with everything included. For the others, check current pricing pages directly — plans and tiers change.
Do Healthie and Practice Better submit insurance claims automatically?
Both support claim workflows — Healthie with integrated CMS-1500 claims through a clearinghouse, Practice Better with superbills and claims features on higher tiers. In both cases you generally still select codes, count units, and monitor statuses yourself. Automatic code generation from documentation and automatic ERA posting is where Alva differentiates.
What should I test during a free trial of practice management software?
Test the boring parts, not the portal. Run one realistic client end to end: an eligibility check, a documented session, code selection, a claim, and see what the software did versus what you did. Count your clicks and minutes — that ratio is what your admin life will look like at scale.
